LA #3, Due 4/12/09

8th and 9th Grade - So I need two things to work on and one thing we do well in each piece of Music. BE SPECIFIC! Use measure numbers!!!

7th Grade - This is another piece of music by Paliestrina (the guy that wrote Chant) What things can we do to make our playing sound more like this singing (they are pretty good!!)?

To be more like them we can play in unison. Also we can get the rythm correct and the dynamics. One more thing we can work on the harmony too!

we need to play more smooth.

The first thing we can do with this and any piece of music is that we can look up at the conducter once in a while. We can also tri and keep a steedy beat in our head while playing. i can tell that these singers must be paying close attention to the conducter.

Procession of the Nobles
Things to work on:
1. We need to work on our correct notes at 6-11
2. We should work on our fast notes at 15-19
3. Work on sticking the last note!
Things we're doing well:
1. We've gotten so much better at 78-91- it actually sounds like music!

Music When Soft Voices Die
Things to work on:
1. Balancing our sound when the trumpets are playing - finding our triangle
2. Making the first note crisp, together, and stronger.
What we're doing well:
1. Measures 19-20 sound really good because we're watching and slowing down well.
2. The transition at 37.

Toccata for Band
Things to work on:
1. Measures 47-48 and measure 132 have notes that don't sound right that we can fix
2. Section 154-171 needs work with correct rhythms and notes (there's not a distinct melody that I can even hear in this section)
3. Personally, I can work on counting and watching more carefully in the last line.
What we're doing well:
1. Measures 1-8 sound really cool and crisp
2. Measure 85 the band does a nice job getting louder (helping me with my crash)

Music When Soft Voices Die:We do well in this song with sticking together through this whole song. We need to work on the dynamics throughout this whole song. We also need the balance triangle because there is some spikes in our triangle for this song.

Procession of the Nobles: As again, we did good sticking together and all made it to the end. We need help on correct rhythm around measures 78 to the end. And the triangle balance when the trumpets hit the high notes(not to pick on them but everyone).

Toccata For Band Again, everyone where we were suppose to be. We need major help on correct notes during the whole song, and of course rhythm on measure 144-184, and the correct rhythm. I also need to play louder on and more clear around measures 115 to the end.

Procession of the Nobles:
GOOD: The woodwinds have the melody down, and all we have to do is play it a bit faster. The beginning is better than the end. Measures 38-50 were okay too.

BAD:We need to work on when we switch the parts on measure 16 -19. We also need to play on the same time with the same note. The woodwinds need to work on measure 78-92 a little bit more.

Music When Soft Voices Die:
GOOD:The ending is pretty god, we're able to hear all the things that are playing. The last note is kind of out of tune, but with it fixed it would sound all right. When the clarinets play the eight notes, your able to hear it.

BAD:Work on the beginning a little bit more, especially when the background music enters in. We need to work on the crescendo and decrescendo from 21-29. In measure 29, need to accelerate a little more.

Toccata for Band:
GOOD:From measures 9-30 it's an okay pitch for the clarinets to play out, 2nd clarinet needs to play a little bit more. In measure 61-73 the trumpets and clarinets did pretty well.

BAD:Some notes are off here and there when we start to play sharps in measure 84-91. The brass needs to practice measure 115-123. We really need to work on 144-184, on hearing each other, not over doing the trills and all the notes between it. We need a little more practice at the end where all the sharps come to place (188-end)

on procession of the nobles we need to work on 116 to the end ( need to make sure note are right) and
38 to 50 make sure we got the right notes and rhythm.
i think we did good at 58 - 78

music when soft voices die we need to work on the dynamics beginning - 10 . We need to work on right notes for 21-28. from 37 - end we did dynamics really good.

toccata for band we need to make sure we dont speed up from 63-67. we messed up at about 149 to 171 people got lost and it sounded bad. what we did good is that the poeople that were speeding up at 184 to 196 slowed down/ stoped and went to were we all were.

Music when soft voices die:
need to work on the chime at beggining, didnt hear it?|soudns like a trumpet is out of place throughout the whole song|the ending was preaty good, stopped as a group

Tocatta for Band:
- Strong Beginning
- Work on the transitions all over the piece.
- 144-171... It's kinda scary
Procession of the Nobles:
- Transitions are good
- Remembering the triangle... (balanced sound)
- 116-end, be sure to stick together.
Music When Soft Voices Die:
- Good job on slowing down
- Trumpets quieter, other instruments louder. That will make a more balanced sound.
- Timing of when lower voices come in on the beginning. It's kinda off

--Bad: Could have been a little louder so I could hear it.

--Procession of the nobles
-Good: Confidence in each note in the beginning.
-Bad: Bombing on the long notes.
-Bad: Bombed the solo at 44.

--Over all we did a good job for the concert being in May.

PROCESSION OF THE NOBLES:
The first measures of this song were strong. It was very together except for a few stray notes. One thing I could work on is the timpani part. The timpani almost sounded like it was out of breath during one of the last solos. The dynamics were very good in this song.

MUSIC WHEN SOFT VOICES DIE:
We stayed together throughout the entire song. You could not even hear the snare and the bells werent in sync with the rest of the band.

TOCATTA FOR BAND:
The dynamics in the first measures were great. The time signature changes before 141 need some work. We need to practice more on our indvidual parts.

Procession of nobles
*meas.38 work on trumpet solo
*90,lows needs to practice the grace notes
-there's not many problems in this piece

procession of the nobles-
One thing that we did well is at 38-50, we had a good tone for the most part. But at 78-92 we did not have a good tone. it sounded like we were unsure of our notes in that key. We also need to work on ending the song together.

music when soft voices die-
one thing that we did well is that at 37, many of us have a eighth rest and we played that at the right time. i think that we could work on going from mf to p at 46-47. also we could work our counting when we come in at the beginning so everyone plays together.

toccata for band-
i think that at 9-30 the whole band had a very nice, clear sound. we could, and need to work on the sfp at 55 and 71 instead of staying at one dynamic.. also we really should work on the counting at 148-171.

Procession of the Nobles: We, or the trumpets improved at the the start. We need to work on mesures 78-92 and at the end.More right notes and better tuning.

Music When Soft Voices die: We stay within the tempo but we at times we aren't within the triangle. We need to read the signs like fermatas and ritardando's. We can get through the song pretty well though.

Tocatta for Band: Measures 73-91 we don't need to practice. Measures 51-73 are really sloppy. We need to work on right notes and rythems. Measures 144-184 are bad. We need to work on the trils and rythem. The ending need work too.

One way our playing can be more like their singing is to watch the conductor(Mr. Terry). I noticed that they looked at their books and then looked up to watch the conductor to make sure that they weren't ahead or behind. Obviously, if we practice, we can sound more like them. We also need to play correct dynamics to sound like them.

PROCESSION OF THE NOBLES:
Bad:
1. Everywhere there’s an eighth note, we have to work on playing it at the same time and stopping at the same time.
2. Triangle sound between 92-end (it’s scattered).
Good:
1. Starting at measure 20, I think we did great! The sound was perfect in my opinion because the lows were quiet, and the melody was perfectly heard.

MUSIC WHEN SOFT VOICES DIE:
Bad:
1. Couldn’t really find a bad thing. Maybe a couple of crescendos/decrescendos that needs work.
2. Correct notes [?]
Good:
1. Starting at measure 21, there’s breath marks. We did well at that.

TOCCATA FOR BAND:
Bad:
1. We need to work on our dynamics.
2. Starting at measure 148 – work on counting.
Good:
1. Measure 73 – 115, we did well at following and slurring.

-Norris V.

Tocatta- bad:
1. We need to work on being together and the rythmn in the beginning.
2. In measure 73 we need to play together and really press our fingers down on the keys.
Good: In measure 10 we played together and sounded really good.

MWSVD- Bad:
1. We need to work on dynamics in the beginning.
2. At measure 37 we need to play together.
Good: In measure 21 we played together and at right dynamics.

POTN- bad:
1. at 12 we need to play more right notes.
2. at 78 we played right rythmn.
Good: at 20 we all played together and we had a very nice sound.

Tocatta for band: We need to speed the whole song up. Also certain sections are drowning others out during the melody. One thing everyone is doing well is getting their fingers down fast.

Music when soft voices die: work on dynamics and also listen to the other sections to play together better. We count all the rests well.

Procession of the Nobles: In measure 16 (i think its 16) the clarinets need to work more on getting the high notes out (the notes are right). Also in the trill at the end of the song we need to take a bigger breath to last the whole way through. One thing we do very well during this song is that all the trumpets stayed together in the first couple measures.

In Procession of the Nobles we need to work on not getting softer in the measures 2-3 and 5-6. We could try to make the triangle of sound more even at 108 to the end. One thing we did good was we counted rests.

In Music When Soft Voices Die we could work on the crescendos and decrescendos. Another thing we could work on is to try and find the right pitch at measures 6-7 and 14-15. One thing we did good is we stayed together throughout the piece.

In Toccata For Band one thing we could work on is in the first 1-8 measures, we need to play the right notes. Another place we need to work on is 148-184, we need to work on the rythms and notes. One thing we did good was staying at the same tempo.

Procession Of The Nobles-
Need to work On...
1. At the beginning, we sounded a bit fuzzy, possibly off-key.
2.As we came up to measure 68 (or test area, read below for my poor excuse for using 'areas' instead of exact measure #'s) we started falling apart, and after 84 we really fell apart, but got back together for an okay ending.
What's good...
Around measure 21 or 22 (not exactly sure, tried counting, I was really stupid and forgot to bring my music home this weekend) sounded really nice and put together.

Music When Soft Voices Die-
Need to work on...
1.As we went through the piece, we seemed to fall apart a little, we weren't together very well.
2.There was also a bit of squeaking towards the end.
What's good...
At the very end, we seemed to stop together, which gave a really nice sound.

Tocatta for Band-
Need to work on...
1.We started of a little loud, and throughout the piece, the dynamics seemed to be off a little bit as well.
2.At measure about 148, I think(after bass clarinet cue notes), I played quite a few wrong notes, I'll have to work on those because they seem to be just about the only thing going on at the time.
What's good...
We did start off pretty close together, and stayed pretty close together at least until 164.

Overall, though each of the songs, it sounds like we aren't paying enough attention to the conductor, which is good because that means that the hardest thing will be getting more correct notes on those really fuzzy areas, especially those from 164-184 in Tocotta.

-Jacob H.

P.S. I feel like a total idiot for forgetting my music this weekend, especially with that test on tocotta, I'm going to hope I'll be able to retake it or something...

Procession of the Nobles

In this piece we need to work on the beginning with the trumpets. We are playing a little too loud and too accented. We also need to work on measure 8 with the sixteenth notes, there are staccatos there and we aren't playing them. I also think we should work on measures 108 through the end. But after all of this we did well at measure 40 through 50, we hit the right notes and played on the beat.

Music, When Soft Voices Die

In this piece i think we need to work more on the rit.'s at measures 8 and 16, 36, and 46. I also think we need to work more on the cresendo's and decresendo's at throughout measures 21-29. However, we did do well with keeping the steady tempo during the melody at measures 1-16.

Toccata For Band

At the beginning I think we need to work on hitting those sixteenth notes while going as fast as we are supposed to. we also need to work on the rhythms at measures 144-184. However, we did well at measure 38, playing right notes and rhythms.

For "tocatta for band" we have to listen to each other more, follow the conductor and to not go faster than the conductor. The end didn't sound so good, we sounded off.
the beginning sounds beautiful.

For "music when soft voices die," two things that we could do better are that when we enter we should enter at the right volume..i forgot the word for it but yea..and we have to work on slowing down by the conductor.
one thing that it sounded good is that it probably sounded like the real thing, we did pretty good i liked the song when we played it especially the flutes and clarinets when they play their harmony, it sounds great

For "Procession of the nobles" two things that we need to work on are overpowering each other in the middle part measure # 36-50, and to follow the instructor and on measures 120-121 we sounded kind of bad..we sounded like we were crashing into each other.
One thing we did good in the song is that we really followed each other and we sounded nice..really really nice..i think we got better throughout the years and experience.

Procession of the Nobles:
Things to work on--
1. The begining we need to pay special attention to the accidentals.
2. We need to keep a better balance so that no one sticks out.
3. Accidentals at 78-92 for clarinets especailly.
4. Our eighth notes sound a little slushy, especially the end needs work bringing all the different parts together.

The thing that I felt the Clarinets did very well was that we played our solo part with mostly correct notes and we had a great transition from the lower to higher notes.

Music When Soft Voices Die:
Things to work on--
1.In the begining, you can barely hear the clarinets even though we sit much closer to the mic.
2. We have to look more closely at the dynamics in general since the rest of the song is coming together very nicely and we have the notes down.
Things we did well--
1. We have a lot of correct notes and a very good sound. We are close to achieving a triangle sound.
2. I think the clarinets and the flutes sounded great together, very beautiful.

Toccata For Band:
Things to work on--
1. Accidentals in the very begining.
2. Transitions and having a good sound during them when the melody changes.
3. Everyone needs to practice in the place we had to start over, 144-184.
4. In the end we have to play together: clarinet, flute, trumpet...I'm pretty sure most of us have the same rythms. 188-End.

Things we did well--
1. Clarinets had a good sound in their solo parts, we played a lot of correct notes.
2. We ended together!

Most of all in this concert, I am worried about Toccata for Band. I don't want to have to start over in the concert like we did in this recording (we've had to do that before in 7th grade and it didn't feel so great.) Otherwise, I think at this point we can definitely pull off Music When Soft Voices Die and probably also Processsion of the Nobles. I'm not worried about those two or Canto, really. I think we just need to work the most on Toccata for Band and then we should be in good shape.

Procession of the Nobles.
1)playing correct notes in trumpet solo.
2)playing strong with confidence in the beginning.

3)we played correct dynamics throughout the whole piece.

Music when soft voices die.
1)we need to work on finding the right now at the very beginning of the note rather than the middle.
2)we need to play a little more quite in measure 7(i think).

3)we play accordingly to Mr. terry and don't speed up or slow down unless conducted to do so.

Toccata for Band.
1)we need to play more right notes at the beginning.
2)brass needs to work on their dynamics for most of the piece

3)nobody really sticks out in this piece, we fit the triangle.

Procession of the Nobles:[+]I really like the accents put on by the trumpets throughout the song.
[-]Measure 81, some instruments started the trill strong but died right in the middle. I think they should keep pressing on till the trill is over.
[-]Measure 108, the trumpets were a bit overpowering the melody instruments and should back off because their part isnt the melody.

Music When Soft Voices Die[+]For the most part, the beginning when the trumpets were in unison (:
[-]I think the crescendos at 21 should be more noticeable.
[-]At the last measure, the piano should really be a piano. We've showed that we can play very soft, we just need to incorporate it into the song.

Toccata for Band[+]I really enjoyed how well the clarinets are playing. The seconds are making so much progress (:(:
[+]The melody//harmony between the trumpets and flutes are not as bad.. ;)
[-]The trumpets have a hard time reaching those higher notes.
[-]At measure 67, the counting is off, some people play during the rest. This throws off the affect of the rest being there.
[-](Basically this is where we fall apart) 154-184 is has trills that aren't stopping, which also throws off the affect. Also, 164 the flutes have these scale like notes that aren't being played.

Tocatta for Band-
Good- I think we played smoothly and had good dynamic changes in measures 73-91, and 184-196. I also think we had good transitions from allegro non troppo to andante and largo.

Bad- I think that personally, the trumpets were playing way too loud, and need to back off a little bit so we can maintain a good triangle. I also think that everyone, low brass in perticular needs to work on measures 144-171, because we had right rythems, just wrong notes.

Music, When Soft Voices Die

Good- In this song we mantained a good triangle the whole way through, as well as having good ritardandos at19-20 and 36, which lead to a good transition at 37.

Bad- I think we did pretty good overall, but i think we started a little bit out of tune at the beginning (2-7), and it kinda hovered there for the whole song. I also think our dynamic changes from21-299 were nonexsistent. We need to work on actually doing the crescendos and decrescendos. Also, we needed more alto sax in 45-47.

Procession of the Nobles

Good- We stayed together the whole time, which is always a plus. 78-96 was also a lot better than it was when we started playing!

Bad- I thought the first 2 trumpet fanfares (1-7, 50-54) were out of tune, and slight work was needed on the rhythem. I also think the trombones need to work on their eighth notes at 55-56, 97-98, and 116-end. when we came in we sounded out of tune the first 2 times, and the notes were completly wrong.

Procession of the Nobles[doing well]
-from measure 12 to 16 the notes played by the winds are very well
separated. they can be heard
individually.
[improvement]
-4 measures before 50, is just all
mashed into a goo of sound. or in
other words we're not playing as 1
-at 108, we play the melody for the
third time. and we have a tendacey
to speed up towards the end of it.

Music, When soft Voices Die[doing good]
-throughout the piece the seconds
and thirds are heard very, very
well. PROPS to the lows & brass.
[improvement]
-from 10 to 16, groups of
instruments seem to switch and
change who takes lead. sometimes
the clarinets are and sometimes
only the flutes are heard.
-33 to 35, the clarinets and flutes
were eagar to reach the rest. we
should've taken our time to play.

Toccata For Band[doing well]
-TRUMPETS! great articulation. (:
[improvement]
-10 to 30 the clarinets were not
very together. The are heard
separately not as one.
-from 154 to 171, everyone seems to
be lost. Everyone just plays to
their group. it's all a BIG mess.

procession of the nobles
-neg. at the beging the notes were a bit off and unclear.. we struggled to produce the correct ones, it made us seem not together.
-neg. when the flutes and i believe clarinets have that "mini solo" the flutes over power the clarinets and also the notes were just abit off, and they should play more together also get and stay in the triangle.
-pos. we were able to end all together which is great! :D

music when soft voices die
-neg. the articulation through out the piece should be more noticable.
-neg. we had troubles delivering the notes clearly and or even the right notes through out the piece, scattered about. shouldnt be a big deal though i'm sure we can hadle that.
-pos. when we played a low note to a high one we didnt over power the low by playing the high one way to loud we were able to play them at the same sound level which is wonderful!

tocatta for band
-neg. it was around measure 171 to about the end we had great trouble.. like notes, articulation, staying together, tone all of that.
-neg. the notes.. some were a bit off though out the piece not just the end. they should be fixed easily with some practice as should the 171 till end part.
-pos. when we had the slower slurred part that was some what lower then the rest of the piece it was pleasent to listen to as was the begining for the most part.

*by the way, my brother heard the end of tocatta for band and was like "whats that terrible noise" opps.. we better practice, practice and guess what PRACTICE! :]*

By practicing a lot and working well together. We also need to make sure that we are looking up at the conductor to make sure that we're on beat and in tune.

We can look up at the conductor once in a while, play the right dynamics, and also keep the right rhythm.

The beginning is kind of funky (procession ) the loudness and softness kept changing and confused me. We also need to work on 86 to the end more still, but it's getting better! I like the beat.

music when soft voices dieeeeee..!?
I love the melody. We need to work on dynamics and between measures 21-37.

toccata:
The clarinets need to be louder and more confident measures 9-30. 55-73 sounded great! although 148-154 could use some help ^.^

there were alot of wrong notes in the begining and wrong rythym. we did pretty good on the dynamis

music when soft voices die;
we don't do well very well on the rests. we do pretty good on notes and dynamics.

tocatta for band;
we really, really need to work on rythym and dynamics. we do okay on notes.

We need to work on keeping the dynamics where they should be; not too loud, not too soft. And I myself really need to work on playing the correct notes. :P

Procession of the Nobles:

*On this peice we do really well on the melody, but at 108 I think the trumpets should quiet down just a little so hte woodwinds can stick out just a little. Also the wood should clean up the sixtenth notes at 116.

Music, When Soft Voices Die:

*We have really improved since this was recorded! We stay in the triangle really well! All ithink we need to work is is our dinamics and and at measure 9 the clarinets need to play louder.

Toccatta for Band:

*Okay seeing that this piece of music is REALLY hard I'm suprised at how well we perform it! I can't to hear it at our concert! Okay so all we need to work on is claening up the sixtenth notes in the melody and we need to work on keeping our tempo at 91. One last thing is we REALLY need to clean up measures 144 through 188. Other than those few things we do really well!!!!!!

Procession of the Nobles:
1)We need to stay at the correct tempo.
2)We need to make sure our stoccatos are stoccatos.
One thing we did well is finish together.

Music When Soft Voices Die
1)We need to start where we left off especially during measures 21-29.
2)Make sure we don't mix up ties with slurs.
What we did well was have a great sound.

Toccata for Band
1)Make sure we stay together at the right tempo.
2)Make sure stoccatos are stoccatos.
What we did well was during the slow parts when it sounded like it was so soft and moving.

Procession of the NoblesThings to work on:
1. We need to make sure we pay attention to the slurs on the sixteenth notes at measure 12.
2. Measures 78-92 is a little rough, but we're getting better at it.

Things going well:
1. The melody at measure 26 is really cool, everybody plays together and its sounds good.

Music, When Soft Voices DieThings to work on:
1. Throughout the piece, we need to make sure & pay attention to all the slurs & accidentals.
2. Make sure the sound is balanced in our triangle, the trumpets have a little bit of trouble with that at the beginning.

Things going well:
1. The tempo change at 37 has gotten a lot better with the transition.

Tocatta for BandThings to work on:
1. Not making the first note of the sixteenth notes so heavy and accented.
2. We all need to keep working at measures 148-184. Listening to the other parts is definitely helping me, but its still a bit rough.

Things going well:
1. Measures 73-81 are sounding really good, and we can hear all the balanced parts.

they have more harmony and they only say parts of words then an other person finishes the rest of the word.

I think we could play more togehter and work on better dynamics. We could also work on playing at a constant tempo

We need to play the dynamics right, and play smoother. They would look up to make sure they weren't falling behind or going ahead of the group.
